PR and the Labour leadership campaign

Isn’t it interesting to hear about the leadership campaign for the Labour party? The four contenders are Liz Kendall, Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Jeremy Corbyn.

Now, to be honest, I’m not a political animal. I’ve not been following the career of these politicians. But have YOU heard of them all? Did you already have an understanding of what they stood for, their special interests and responsibilities? How are you going to form an impression of them?

If you don’t know them personally, I would hazard a guess that we will form our opinions through what we hear in the media. As ever, we’ll find out about what they are doing and saying through the media … and we’ll also find out what OTHERS are saying about them in the same way. And what others are reporting is sometimes the more powerful influencer.

In other words, we will use PR to form our impression.  Public relations. The art of persuading, informing, connecting people with people. And it operates through all the usual channels – talking, traditional media and social media.

So don’t ever underestimate the power of PR.  It’s the way we all make up our minds to buy (or indeed vote) in one way or another.
