Local business computer consultancy and IT solutions provider, The IT Dept. is gearing up for a major computer operating system change when Microsoft’s most popular operating system ever, Windows XP will be officially retired on Tuesday 8th April.
In less than a week this system, which has been around since 2001 and is installed on almost 30% computers, will no longer be supported with the release of security patches.
Since the news was announced, Chorley based The IT Dept. has been preparing individuals and businesses who are still loyal Windows XP users for the impact.
The IT provider has put together detailed Q&A on their website which aims to shed some light on the implications, and seeks to allay some of the scaremongering.
Michael Donkin, managing director says: “We realise that some people have been using this operating system for over a decade it can be quite overwhelming to choose a new one. However, the fact is, an upgrade is well overdue if you are still on XP, but advice on this can be hard to find, so we put our heads together and came up with an idea to produce a Q&A document explaining everything in detail.
“The datasheet includes relevant questions people might have and straight-to-the-point answers to explain what is at stake and what can be done.”
According to Michael, people should bear in mind that hackers are forever attempting to discover new vulnerabilities in their computer operating system and if they are still using Windows XP then the chances of a successful hack will quickly grow over the next few weeks.
